Purpose

The purpose of this award, sponsored by the Florida Department of Education Commissioner’s Task Force on Holocaust Education, is to recognize and celebrate a teacher in Florida in grades 9 – 12 who encourages an appreciation and respect for others, involves students in the process of Holocaust awareness, evidences mastery of the subject matter, and exemplifies Holocaust education.

Eligibility

The applicant must currently be teaching in a Florida public, private, or charter high school. Members of the Task Force, employees of the Task Force sites, or their families and relatives are not eligible to enter.

Applicants are requested to submit a portfolio, which includes the following:

  1. A resume, including any recognitions, awards, professional associations, and/or grants received.
  2. A one-page statement of philosophy that articulates why teaching the Holocaust is a meaningful, relevant, subject for students.
  3. Two lesson plans or projects which, taken together, reflect best teaching practices and the ability to inspire students to a love of history.
  4. Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a supervisor, a peer teacher, and a student who has been taught about the Holocaust by the teacher.
  5. Portfolio due no later than June 1.

Award

  • $300.00 Cash prize
  • Complimentary registration for the Florida Council for the Social Studies annual conference
  • Publication of lesson plan in Trends and Issues

Please note the winner must be able to attend the conference and the awards dinner to receive the cash prize.

Each site will select a winner from their area. These finalists will then be submitted for consideration for the state award. Each will also require a letter of recommendation from the forwarding Task Force site.
