District 7—Pinellas County
The Pinellas County Council for the Social Studies has been busy this year offering teachers exciting training opportunities as well as social gatherings. In November the PCSS held the “Largo Library Tour”. This was a tour of the new community library in Largo, Florida. The facility offered some unique opportunities for teachers and students. Teachers enjoyed a personalized tour and refreshments of dessert and coffee. In February the PCSS offered another opportunity for training and earning component points through the Stavros Center for Economic Education. We presented “Dinner and a Movie” to members and non-members alike. The movie was “The Incredibles” and Fred Dorsett discussed lessons on Free Enterprise, Entrepreneurship, and Competition. This movie cartoon about downsized super heroes serves as a springboard for a discussion of the nature of excellence, innovation, free enterprise, and the development of human capital. Teachers received a guide of selected readings and eleven lessons appropriate for a variety of grade levels. Prior to the movie teachers were served a lovely dinner and were surrounded by decorations with a Valentine theme. At the end of the year was our annual banquet and awards ceremony. Members of the Pinellas Council for the Social Studies enjoyed all of our programs free of charge., however programs are also open to all Social Studies teachers in the county for a small fee.
