District 2 Report--Alachua, Baker, Calhoun, Columbia, Dixie, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton,Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor, Union, and Wakulla Counties

Hello to all District 2 Social Studies Educators!  (Alachua, Baker,

Calhoun, Columbia, Dixie, Franklin, Gadsden, Gilchrist, Gulf, Hamilton,

Jackson, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Suwannee, Taylor,

Union, and Wakulla)

The 2006-07 school year is in full swing and summer

vacation is only a memory now.  I know that everyone is very busy with their

everyday classroom duties, but thank you for taking the time to read your

FCSS newsletter.  FCSS truly lives up to their mission statement of

promoting public awareness of the social studies, and in assisting classroom

teachers.  The annual conference will be at the Miami Hilton, October 11-14,

and then a Regional Conference for the Panhandle Area will be held at

Tallahassee Community College on February 3, 2007.  Please check the FCSS website for more information.

FCSS is also in the midst of a large reorganization project, which

will allow for greater representation throughout our state and improve

communications.  Please consider helping to start a local social studies

council in your area.  There is financial help through the FCSS Endowment

Committee if you are interested in starting a local council. Social Studies

Educators need to have their voicees heard, and we do not want to be left out

of key educational decisions, simply because we are not an 'official' FCAT

tested discipline.

Let me know if you have any questions.  Please volunteer to present

at the Regional Conference, or help us locate anyone who could provide

an interesting and worthwhile presentation.  Have a great school year!
