District 7—Pinellas County
The Pinellas Council for the Social Studies held their annual banquet on August 30, 2006. Our refreshments were provided by the “Pizza Man” who came fully equipped with his own ovens and made a dozen different pizzas. We also offered soft drinks, beer and wine. Our agenda included approving the new slate of officers, recognizing the Teacher of the Year winners and the group’s re-affiliation with the Florida Council for the Social Studies. After dinner and the recognitions attendees played quiz bowl with school teams competing using electronic buzzers. WOW, teachers are so competitive!! Prizes were awarded!
In October, Pinellas County social studies teachers were well represented at the FCSS Conference in Miami. Many of our teachers took advantage of the variety of sessions and brought back many innovative ideas to incorporate into their classrooms.
We are all looking forward to the 50th Anniversary FCSS Conference in Orlando in October, 2007. Members of the Pinellas Council for the Social Studies (PCSS) executive board are planning the group’s spring event.
In February we plan to participate in an activity with the 97th Regimental Civil War Reenactment group at Fort DeSoto Park. We will have a shelter at the park and a cookout as well.
Our PCSS newsletter is due out soon. Members received a letter and small gift from the executive board in December.
