ASCSA Summer Sessions,

          2007 Funding Opportunities for Teachers 


The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Summer Sessions for 2007:  two six-week sessions (June 11 -- July 25 and June 18 -- August 1) are designed for those who wish to become acquainted with Greece and its antiquities in a limited time, and to improve their understanding of the relationship between the monuments, landscape, and climate of the country and its history, literature, and culture.

Cost of program is $2,950 (tuition, accommodations for entire six weeks, partial board, all travel within Greece, site and museum entrance fees). Round-trip travel from the U.S. to Greece is the responsibility of participant.
 
Scholarships are available for middle and secondary school teachers in public or private schools, graduate students, and college teachers to participate in the ASCSA Summer Sessions program.  Fields of study include: art, Classics, Greek, Hellenic studies, history, Latin, languages, literature, social studies, world cultures.

Rea Silvia Borza Scholarship


The Borza is reserved for a high school teacher in history, art, literature or some other field that would be enhanced by a summer's study at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.  Preference will be given to teachers in public high schools. Amount: $1,500. Deadline: January 15, 2007. ASCSA Summer Sessions application:    http://www.ascsa.edu.gr/

Katherine Keene Scholarship
The Keene scholarship is awarded to a public high school teacher who teaches social studies or has shown interest in aspects of the Classics, and has been able to include that material in his/her offerings. Semple Award of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South
Members of CAMWS who are either secondary school Greek or Latin teachers in the CAMWS territory or graduate students in a degree-granting program in Classics are eligible to apply for this scholarship. Amount: $2,500 Deadline: February 1, 2007.  Web site: www.camws.org.
Arthur Patch McKinlay Scholarships of the American Classical League

The applicant must have been a member of the ACL for the preceding three years, plus current academic year, and must be planning to teach Classics at the elementary or secondary school level during the 2007/2008 school year. College/university teachers are not eligible. Deadline: January 15, 2007. Amount: Up to $1,500. E-mail: info@aclclassics.org.
 
Eta Sigma Phi Summer Scholarship for the ASCSA

Members and alumni of Eta Sigma Phi who have received a Bachelor's degree since January 1, 2001 and on or before June 2007, and who have not received a doctoral degree are eligible to apply for this scholarship.  In selecting the winner, the Committee will give attention to the quality of the applicant's work in Greek and Latin, intention to teach at the secondary school or college level, and contribution to the activities of Eta Sigma Phi at the local and national levels. Amount: One-half of all fees plus stipend (ASCSA pays half of all fees). Deadline: February 1, 2007. E-mail: perkins@marshall.edu.
 

CANE Endowment Scholarship
Residents of New England who are currently members of the Classical Association of New England and have been members in good standing for the past two years or more are eligible.  Public and private elementary and secondary school teachers are eligible. However, preference is given to secondary school teachers. Amount: $4,510.  Please note that $2,950 of the award goes to the ASCSA for tuition, partial room and board, and travel within Greece required for the program. Amount: $4,510. Adelaide Hahn Scholarship of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States
An award of up to $6,000 toward the cost of study for the ASCSA Summer Sessions. Applicants must be CAAS members in good standing for two consecutive years prior to the year in which they apply for the scholarship. Preference will be given to classicists who are pre-college teachers or graduate students and those who have not previously received this award. Postmark deadline: March 1, 2007. Fulbright Foundation

Five awards are available this year through the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program of the U.S. Department of State. Eligible candidates must be teachers (of grades 7 through 12 or at a two-year college) in the fields Greek language, or ancient or art history--subjects that touch on the Greek world. Amount of award: $3,500. Please note that $2,950 of the award goes to the ASCSA for tuition, partial room and board, and travel within Greece required for the program. Grantees are responsible for any additional expenses including international transportation and some room and board costs in Greece. Note early deadline: October 15, 2006.
