Over 400 people attended the 2006 FCSS Conference in Miami, October 11-15, 2006. The annual conference began on Thursday with several pre-conference sessions and ended on Saturday with our popular exhibits raffle.

Peggy Altoff, President of the National Council for the Social Studies and Fred Lewis, Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice were featured speakers at Friday’s breakfast sponsored by McGraw-Hill. Both speakers offered words of encouragement for social studies teachers and each gave their stirring support of civic education and the promotion of civic responsibility.

Conference participants indicated great satisfaction with the quality and usefulness of the eighty sessions that were conducted.  The annual Awards Dinner on Friday evening honored over thirty educators as outstanding teachers or leaders.  The Teacher of the Year Awards Dinner was followed by a relaxing poolside reception sponsored by Prentice Hall.

FCSS wishes to thank Glencoe-McGraw Hill, Prentice Hall, TCI, Harcourt and McDougal-Littell, and Holt, Rinehart and Winston for their sponsorship of FCSS and its activities.  These corporate sponsors were among over forty exhibitors who enabled teachers to view the latest in excellent educational materials.

We are looking forward to our 50th Anniversary FCSS Conference, which will be held October 10th through 13th, 2007 at the beautiful Rosen Shingle Creek Resort and Golf Club in Orlando.  In addition to our usual activities, special commemorative events are planned, including the unveiling of a book that details the history of FCSS and its contributions to social studies education.

Begin making your plans now to attend!  Complete information about the conference will appear on the FCSS website in February.
