Reading and Social Studies!
As teachers of reading in the Social Studies we often cite our most critical need as simply attempting to get our students to meaningfully interface with our text. If we can support students in this pursuit, then we can "win" as content area instructors. We can do much more meaningful "frontload" before we begin with a piece of text, and have a lot of fun with some summarization techniques after the reading. However, the process we use to support readers during the reading needs to be both meaningful and consistent.
The "Hold Your Thinking" document is a "go-to" for during reading instruction and can be adapted to your reading selection by just changing the labels in the four squares. Students should be able to consistently have something to go to in order to organize their thoughts and the important aspects of the reading.
See the attached reading tools with this philosophy in mind!
