FCSS Awards for Teachers of Social Studies

The Awards Committee of the Florida Council for the Social Studies has sent information to all Florida school district superintendents and social studies supervisors about the annual awards offered by the Florida Council for the Social Studies organization.  These awards include the following:

  1. The Warren Tracy Beginning Teacher of the Year Award
  2. The Excellence in Teaching History Award
  3. The Global Education Award
  4. The district-nominated Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award.

The committee currently awaits responses, all of which are due by May 1, except for portfolios for the Warren Tracy Beginning Teacher Award, which are due March 25. At that time, the Warren Tracy portfolios will be evaluated, the three top candidates will be contacted and will receive information about the interview part of the awards process.

How does your FCSS Awards Committee Work???

The volunteer Awards Chairperson oversees a small committee of dedicated individuals who are responsible for the distribution of information concerning FCSS awards, the evaluation of nominee portfolios/materials, as well as the awards banquet at the annual conference.

Busy times for the committee include January and February, when information regarding awards is sent to all Florida school district superintendents and social studies supervisors.

In March, the committee reviews portfolio materials sent in response to the Warren Tracy Beginning Teacher Award, and notifies the top three finalists of the interview process which is to follow.

In May, the committee notifies nominees who have been chosen to represent their districts as Social Studies Teachers of the Year.

During the summer, the committee evaluates portfolios and notifies the winners of the Warren Tracy Beginning Teacher Award, the Excellence in Teaching History Award, and the Global Education Award.

During August and September, members work to facilitate voting for the seven Professional and Lay Awards offered by FCSS, as well as finalize details for the awards banquet in October.  Award winners attend the awards banquet, part of the annual October FCSS Council for the Social Studies Conference; this year held in Orlando, Florida celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the Florida Council for the Social Studies.
