Return to June 2007 Home

The Holocaust Museum of Southwest Florida, in Naples, and Florida Gulf Coast University are presenting the fourth annual professional development seminar this June.

Holocaust Studies for Educators will take place on June 11 – 15, 2007 at Florida Gulf Coast University.  The seminar will run daily from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. A combination of lecture, discussion, testimony and hands-on activities will be used to give teachers a comprehensive history, as well as practical classroom activities.  FGCU faculty, museum staff, survivors, liberators, authors and Holocaust educators will share their knowledge and experience with the participants.

The topic of this year’s seminar, The Holocaust, Genocide and Young People, will focus on the history of the Holocaust, as well as genocides that have occurred since the Holocaust ended.  We’ll be looking not only at the historical context of these events, but will also be experiencing them through the eyes of children who endured them.

Because of state and private funding, this seminar is free to Florida educators.  Participants will be provided with lunch each day and several resources to aid them in the classroom.  The only cost to the participant is her/his travel expense.  Participants will be asked to create a unit on the Holocaust for use in the classroom and report on its use to the seminar organizers.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn from experts in the field as well as from personal testimony.   We are excited to offer teachers this opportunity to explore a difficult topic and network with fellow educators in order to offer solid, engaging programming in the classroom.

Feel free to contact by phone or e-mail with any questions.
