ANNOUNCING A FABULOUS CONTENT AREA READING WORKSHOP PRESENTED BY HOLT, RINEHART AND WINSTON !

Presenters: JUDITH L. IRVIN AND JANEL BROUSSARD WOOD
DESCRIPTION:
The morning session presented by Dr. Irvin will introduce participants to several effective literacy learning practices grounded in research and theory that help students learn from social studies text. The foundations of literacy learning will be presented and several strategies that help students with literacy and content learning will be demonstrated.
In the afternoon session, Janel Wood will address the issue of teaching social studies to struggling or reluctant readers. Participants will learn strategies that integrate reading support and program content to promote critical thinking skills. They will also explore how graphic organizers, visualization techniques, and chunking of text can help their students become strategic readers.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:
Judith L. Irvin is currently a Professor at Florida State University. Dr. Irvin’s repertoire includes chairing the Research Committee for the National Middle School Association for six years and serving the National Literacy Project as Executive Director, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving middle and high school literacy. She has written and edited numerous books, chapters, and articles on adolescent literacy – most notably Reading and the High School Student: Strategies to Enhance Literacy(with Buehl and Klemp, 2007), Strategies for Enhancing Literacy and Learning in Middle School Content Area Classrooms (with Buehl and Radcliffe, 2007) and Teaching Middle School Reading (with Rycik, 2005). Dr. Irvin has recently completed a book published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development; Taking Action on Adolescent Literacy: An Implementation Guide for School Leaders, a project funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York. She is a speaker and consultant to school systems and professional organizations throughout the nation and served on the Commission on Adolescent Literacy of the International Reading Association and the Board of the National Middle School Association. She spent eight years as a middle and high school social studies and reading teacher.
Janel Broussard Wood is a veteran of twenty-eight years as a Texas social studies classroom teacher in the Dallas and Houston area. She received her bachelor and master degrees from Southern Methodist University, mid-management certification from the University of Houston, and gifted certification from the University of North Texas. While teaching in Plano, she served on the Middle School Curriculum Development Team, where she worked half day in the classroom and half day creating interactive, online curriculum for district teachers. During this time she served on the Texas Education Agency Review Committee for the social studies state TAKS test. She received the Ross Perot Excellence in Education Award as well as Outstanding American History Teacher of Texas. Janel has been a consultant with Holt, Rinehart and Winston since 2002, presenting workshops on reading support, implementing creative strategies and integrating technology into the classroom.

Teaching Social Studies Through Reading and Writing
Presenters: Patricia Rodriguez, Teresa Chavez, Clay Kelsey, University of South Florida
Strategy and skill instruction in Social Studies will be modeled, linking reading and writing activities that will help students form deeper and richer understanding and become active and engaged learners.
Geography Through Literature
Presenters: Mary Ellen Adlam and Mikey Marini, Florida Geographic Alliance
Exciting ways to incorporate geography throughout the curriculum will be presented.
Using Social Studies to Teach and Improve Literacy
Presenter: Michael G. Fauqher, Challenger Middle School
Use Social Studies to enhance development of Vocabulary, Comprehension and Fluency by combining activities proven to increase literacy in informational texts and to individualize each student’s note taking ability.
Literacy Strategies in the Social Studies
Presenters: Mitch Rosin and Sam Hess
This workshop will introduce literacy strategies that can be used to enhance reading comprehension and content acquisition in every content area classroom. Teachers will be provided with literacy materials that are designed for all students including struggling readers, English language learners and remedial learners.
Vocabulary Strategies for Success in Social Studies With All Students
Presenter: Vivian Bernstein, Steck-Vaughn Company
Explore seven interactive vocabulary strategies to enable remedial and on-level students to read social studies materials with better comprehension. Use innovative activities to help students take ownership of vocabulary and improve their writing.
Developing Content Literacy Skills Using Print and Web Content
Presenter: Thomas Castellano, Newsweek Education Program
This session focuses on content literacy strategies that build students’ skills critical to academic success. Participants leave the presentation with a set of “tools”, helpful handouts, Newsweek and more!

Practice FCAT Reading Skills While Learning About Latin America and Latino Studies
Presenter: Mary Risner, University of Florida
Come to this session and see newly acquired resources on Latin America from the University of Florida. All participants will get a CD with a collection of Latin American and Latino readings with comprehension excercises.
