Teacher workshop to be held at UF:  New Perspectives on Early Modern China

The Asian Studies Program and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) will host a digital workshop on China history for middle and high school teachers and media specialists. The workshop will be held at the University of Florida and will run for five Saturdays, Jan. 12 & 26,  Feb. 9, and Mar. 1 & 29, 2008.

New Perspectives on Early Modern China will acquaint teachers and media specialists with the best scholarship on China’s historical development. Our workshop will be led by Dr. Joseph Murphy, Director of our Asian Studies Program, and will include guest lectures by top scholars from Columbia University,

the University of Hawaii, and other universities. The seminar is based on two new multimedia modules that allow teachers and students to explore in depth the history of late imperial China, using high quality materials from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  The lecturers and on-site specialists will facilitate discussion and provide an opportunity for topical interaction among colleagues at the three sites of the workshop UF, Columbia University and the University of North Texas.  In the workshop, teachers will create a peer-reviewed lesson plan for their own classroom use.

We seek participants whose specialties range from art and world history, to social studies, visual arts and media specialists/ librarians. Benefits for teachers include continuing education credits from the University of Florida at no charge, in-service points where applicable, and a $350 honorarium upon

completion of the course.

Given the importance of China to the United States and the world, both today and in the future, it is essential than the next generation of Americans understands the history and economic heritage that shaped contemporary China. This workshop, and the Web modules upon which it will draw, seek to provide precisely this background to teachers.
