Return to May 2008 Home
The Sunshine State Standards for Social Studies, like those of other subject areas, are in the process of review and revision. For Social Studies, the process began in June of 2007 and has progressed throughout the 2007/08 school year. The Florida Department of Education identified participants to serve as framers, writers, and advisers. There will be public review of the revised standards as well as a review by experts in the field. Teachers are encouraged to participate in the public review process which will begin May 17 and continue for sixty days. The new standards can be viewed at www.flstandards.org . Three formal hearings are scheduled to receive input and will be conducted as follows:
June 20, 2008 in Dade County at Felix Varela High School
June 23, 2008, in Orlando, Florida at Jones High School
June 26, 2008 in Tallahassee, Florida at Lincoln High School.
These hearings will last from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
Based on feedback from the public review and the formal hearings, the standards will be revised and go to the state Board of Education in October. Please take the time to participate in the process which will impact every social studies classroom, both in curriculum and in the instructional materials that are used. Make sure your views are heard at the DOE and share any concerns with your local FCSS Directors. FCSS will be monitoring the process and representing your interests in every way possible.
At this time it is not known how the recently enacted legislation on the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards will impact the current revision process. Under the new statute, Next Generation Standards must be complete and approved by the State Board of Education by December 31, 2011.
